John Emil List is pictured above with his family, who he murdered in November of 1971. His wife Helen (46), daughter Patricia (16) and sons John (15) and Frederick (13) were all found with fatal gunshot wounds to the back of the head. However, John was actually discovered with 10 bullets embedded into various parts of his body. List’s 84 year old mother was also found dead in a different room of the house. One week before the killings, Patricia had complained to one of her teachers that she felt her life was in danger, but her concerns were ignored. She’d told of how her father had “called us around the table and said he would have to kill us because he could no longer support us. He said he could not look after us the way he wanted to.” John List fled the family’s mansion after the killings, although he first cleared up all the blood and left classical music blaring out around the house. He remained on the run and undetected for 18 years, during which time he remarried, until eventually he was arrested in 1989 and received five life sentences for his crimes. List died whilst incarcerated at 82 years old in March 2008 due to pneumonia complications.
