Although 17 year old William George Heirens did not rape or sexually assault his female victims prior to murdering them, he did admit to becoming aroused. Heirens described how he “got a real thrill” yet stated that “it was more the breaking in than the murders. I just lost it. But I never touched them in that way.” However, he could not divulge why he’d decided to linger at each crime scene for a couple of hours after the murders or why he had washed the blood from each victim. According to forensic expert David Steinman, investigators were “lucky he didn’t have warm water,” because if Heirens had opted to clean his shoes and the deceased with warm water instead of cold, he would have essentially removed all evidence of his presence from the scene of the crime and there may not have been a conviction at that time.
