On December 1st, 1997, a 14-year-old boy named Michael Carneal initiated a shooting rampage at Heath High School. He wrapped up a shotgun and a rifle in a blanket, passing them off as an art project, and also stored a loaded .22 pistol in his backpack. Upon arrival, he inserted earbuds and, with the pistol, fired eight rounds at a prayer group that was sitting outside of the school, killing three girls and severely injuring five others. After he was finished, Micahel dropped the gun to the ground and said to one of the surviving members of the prayer group, ‘’Kill me, please. I can’t believe I did that.’’ He surrendered to the school’s principle and when questioned by an English teacher, Michael said, ‘’It was like I was in a dream, and I woke up.’’ Michael was diagnosed with schizophrenia and sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole in 25 years.
