In 2009, 23-year-old Rocrast Mack was arrested after selling just $10 worth of crack to an undercover policeman. He pleaded guilty to this charge and was sentenced to 20 years incarcerated at Ventress Correctional Facility in Clayton, Alabama. On 4 August, 2010, prison officer, Melissa Brown, was doing a routine headcount of the inmates when she encountered Mack, who was laying down on his bed with a blanket covering him. She accused him of looking at her inappropriately and produced her baton and hit him in the face. He attempted to cover behind the bed and cover his face with his hands while the attack continued. Mack then hit the officer in the face and attempted to run away from the enraged officer and to the prison dorm lobby. Another prison guard ordered him to stop running to which he complied. Another five prison guards arrived on the scene and then, in front of all of the other prisoners in the dorm lobby, they took turns beating Mack with the feet, fists, and batons. Unsurprisingly, Mack fell into a coma and was taken to hospital by the guards who had just brutally beaten him. The prison Chaplain informed Mack’s parents, who were then denied seeing their son in hospital under orders by the warden. Mack died the following day. He had sustained fractures to his ribs, arms, legs, and skull during the attack and his death was ruled a homicide and three of the officers were charged.
