Ronnie Lee Gardner, 49, was executed by firing squad in Utah on June 18th, 2010. Gardner’s case caused the State of Utah to limit the number of appeals in death penalty cases. His case stayed in the court system for 25 years. Gardner had received the death penalty for fatally shooting an Attorney when he was being transferred to the courthouse for a hearing on another homicide charge against him. That homicide happened during an armed robbery. He received a life sentence for the robbery homicide, but he received death for the killing of the Attorney. Gardner’s execution would be the first execution by firing squad in 14 years. Gardner says he chose firing squad because of his mormon beliefs. The firing Squad has been outlawed now but 3 of the 8 inmates on Utah’s death row have had their firing squad choice grandfathered in. They will be the last people to ever be executed in Utah by firing squad. Those three inmates are Taberone Dave Honie, Troy Michael Kell, and Ralph Leroy Menzies. They have bee on death row for 16, 19, and 27 years respectively.
