12-year-old Christopher Pittman was a troubled boy, for his family situation was rocky at best. He claimed his mother had up and left more than once and his father frequently abused him. His parents had an on/off relationship but ultimately split up in 2001, causing Christopher to feel abandoned by his mother. He threatened to kill himself, later running away from home. He was picked up by police and committed to a facility for troubled or runaway children. During the six days he was in there, he was put on Paxil for mild depression. After his release, Christopher’s father sent him packing to live with his grandparents in South Carolina. Despite his rough childhood, his grandparents always tried their best to provide the stable and functional environment Christopher had lacked his entire life. However, the steady ground did not last long. Since his doctor had no samples of Paxil to give him, he abruptly switched his antidepressants to Zoloft and doubled his dosage. His family noted an immediate change in Christopher’s behavior. He was fidgety, manic, and often complained that his entire body felt like it was burning. On November 28, 2001, just two days after his dose had been upped, Christopher choked a fellow student on the bus. After his grandparents found out, he received a paddle spanking from his grandfather. That same night, Christopher went into his grandparents’ bedroom and shot them both with a shotgun. He subsequently set the house ablaze using candles and paper and fled the scene in his grandparent’s car. Christopher was caught and arrested two days later, after which he came clean about the murders, stating his grandparents deserved what they got. He plead guilty to manslaughter and was handed a 25-year sentence. In 2006, Christopher earned his GED in prison and said that although he believes his grandparents have forgiven him, he doesn’t think he’ll ever be able to forgive himself.
