Breck Bednar was an avid gamer, a member of the Air Force Corps and loved graphic design and computing. On the 17th of February 2014, in a flat in Essex, the 14-year-old’s life was cut short by a callous murderer who purposefully lured him to his death.
Leading up to his murder, Breck’s mother had restricted his laptop and other electronic devices after she became concerned about a boy who he communicated with via a “members only” internet club at their local church. That boy was Lewis Daynes. He was the leader and admin of this group and had the power to expel members, owning and controlling an Internet chat channel on which members would communicate by voice. Daynes displayed a series of alarming behaviours, such as persuading his club to donate $2.5 million in bitcoins to Syrian rebels and had told them all not to go to school because he already had jobs in technology lined up for them. It was no secret to locals that this character was certainly strange, but nothing could prepare the town of Grays for the brutal murder that he committed.
After luring Breck to his flat, Daynes stabbed him in the neck several times. When police arrived on the scene, he was still alive but they failed to stop the bleeding and he tragically died. Daynes posted about the murder online, moments after it happened and he even sent graphic photographs to Breck’s 12-year-old sisters of his bleeding body. The 18-year-old psychopath was sentenced to 25-to life later that year. Recently, it has emerged that he is secretly blogging from prison using a secret phone, but jail staff have yet to find the device.
