Ronny Möckel and Susann Hartung were the only students killed during the Erfurt shooting in April 2002.
Both were students of Class 8C. Robert Steinhäuser had previously looked into their classroom but apparently without seeing that a teacher was present (or taking her for a student) and had not entered the classroom. After this incident, the teacher had locked the door.
Apparently unaware of the danger, 15-year old Ronny Möckel was waiting in front of the door and begged his teacher to let him out so that he could smoke a cigarette. He even made jokes to classmates that he would defend them with his Karate skills.
Students described how suddenly someone from outside pushed down the doorhandle and rattled at the door. Shortly afterwards, eight shots were fired through the door.
Ronny Möckel was hit twice and died immediately.
14-year old Susann Hartung was standing at the teacher’s desk and talking to the teacher when she was hit by a bullet. She fell to the floor and died within a few minutes.
