16 December: the assassination of Robert Smith Vance

On 16 December 1989, Robert Smith Vance, a United States federal judge, was assassinated via mail bomb. He was killed instantly, and his wife, Helen, was seriously injured by the explosion. An intensive investigation found the perpetrator to be Walter Moody, Jr. (pictured above), who also killed Robert E. Robinson, a black civil rights attorney in Georgia. Moody was later sentenced to death by electrocution in the state of Alabama in 1997, where he remains on death row.
