16-year-old Mark Konkov came from a very privileged upbringing – he was the father of a wealthy construction tycoon. Konkov had been dating 16-year-old Karina Zalesov for a number of months but after they broke up, Konkov began to threaten to commit suicide if Zalesov did not come over to his house. When she arrived, Konkov brutally beat his former girlfriend with his fists and then a wooden figurine before producing a knife and stabbing her twelve times in the throat and thirteen times in the face. Much to the dismay of locals, Konkov was placed under house arrest as opposed to being detained. This decision caused a string of protests from people who believed that the case was being pushed under the rug due to the wealth of the family. As Konkov was 16 at the time of the crime, he was only sentenced to nine years in a penal colony.

Too add insult to injury, Konkov’s father, Igor, tried to make out that the couple had made a suicide pact and that Zalesov had stabbed herself, adding that he didn’t find it to be a “murder of special cruelty,” and that “I saw her body and she looked normal, she was just dead.” In addition to the stab wounds in the neck and face, Zalesov also had several defensive wounds on her hands and arms, indicating she had attempted to defend herself from Kokov. His parents both blamed Zalesov for her own murder, with Konkov’s mother, Natalia, exclaiming: “Does anybody think that I would allow my son to be close with this girl? She was not from our social strata. If this girl knew it is not good to come to somebody’s house just like that, she would be alive.’
